I love when you find an author who just has a good flavor to their writing. It could be the way they handle characters, the way they use certain tropes or themes, even the specific lilt of their words. Its familiar and comforting and carries across different stories, like coming back to a place of comfort and recognizing the furniture.

Thank you!💕

It's always been my dream to develop my craft in a way that can bring joy and comfort to others.

Among all of the incredibly talented writers I have the privilege of knowing - you are awesome, keep doing what you do - I have to give a special shout-out to @i-did-not-mean-to and @hirazuki for their lovely, evocative writing styles. It's been inspiring me a lot!

i-did-not-mean-to

SHUT UP! Don't you dare do this to me!!!!

@cilil is an exceptional writer who works hard for everything she puts out and deserves to be recognised and applauded for that.

She writes incredible stories, finding the right balance between darkness and humour, love and despair, and eroticism and horror.

While I am a hack who mainly writes without thinking about anything at all, @cilil brings you incredibly well-crafted works every time!

So do not waste your time with me when you could read her! For real!

But, as this is a love-train, besides @cilil...

@polutrope, @ettelene, @cuarthol are just always flawless.

@elentarial, @last-capy-hupping, @thatfeanorian, @sallysavestheday, @goschatewabn will always scratch that itch just right.

@laurfilijames, @linasofia, @lathalea, @legolasbadass and @middleearthpixie are safe bets; you know that you'll get some amazing content, no matter the subject.

@lordoftherazzles I'll read anything you put out, just because I love your style to the moon and back.

@maglor-my-beloved WILL betray you and give you ouchies, beware!

@scyllas-revenge has the most exceptional, witty sense of humour you'll ever see.

There are people you will open anything by, because you know it will be good. (@admirablemonster is another one)

It's like Agatha Christie, Shakespeare, Racine, Maupassant...you know the style, you know the outlook, it feels like coming home...and finding a new coat of colour and a festive decoration.

Don't even get me started on artists...

I am sure I've forgotten half of my faves, I am sorry, I just came home from work, I am running a fever, and I've not eaten today.

If you see me in your notes more than once, it means that I am a fan! I promise!

The scent of pine is strong as I hurriedly walk barefoot along the narrow trail leading away from the cabin, leaving the laughter and singing behind. Dry pine needles cover my path and the soft carpet created by mother nature silences my footsteps. The night is still young, but the birds have already put their little ones to sleep. Warm air is surrounding me and the midnight sun prevents my skin from getting cold despite the late hour.

His voice calls me back, but I keep on walking, eager to put some distance between us. The way his eyes shone with a special light when I met his gaze, and his lips left a small burning mark on the back of my hand, made me question what he really wants from me. Dr. Astrov, or just Astrov, as most people seem to call him outside work, is a friend and colleague of my brother, and the main reason why I am at this party in a cabin located deep in the forest. My brother raised an eyebrow when I, too quickly, accepted his invitation. But the truth is that as soon as I heard that Nikolay was having his birthday party at Astrov’s place, I knew I needed to be there.

The Arrival

Yes, my beloved readers, it's time for another Thorin fic from yours truly!

image

Relationships: Thorin Oakenshield x Reader/OC (pick one)
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Author's notes: Thorin and his Company have reclaimed Erebor and started rebuilding their kingdom. Everything seems fine except for the fact that the King Under The Mountain is eagerly awaiting the arrival of someone very dear to him...

Also, I want to apologise to Peter Jackson for stealing some lines from An Unexpected Journey and J.R.R. Tolkien for appropriating and rephrasing one sentence from The Lord of The Rings.  I'm a hopeless romantic, what can I say?

You can find this fic on AO3.

For @legolasbadass 💙💙💙

The King Under the Mountain, Thorin, son of Thráin, son of Thrór, the second of his name, also known as Thorin Oakenshield, the king of Durin’s folk, was not a patient Dwarf—and yet he waited. He had been standing on the main terrace above the Great Gate of Erebor since the moment when the first rays of the morning sun gilded the distant peaks of the Iron Hills. His eyes, however, were turned towards the west, where the jagged tops of the Misty Mountains grazed against the pink sky. As he took a deep breath, fresh spring air filled his lungs. It was his—and his people’s—first spring in Erebor since it was reclaimed. The winter after the Battle of Five Armies passed in a blink of an eye. The kingdom was being rebuilt and prepared for the returning Dwarves, food stores had to be replenished, new trade agreements had to be signed… but among all those duties, something else kept Thorin awake until late on many a night. His memories.

@lathalea you are the best and I love you and this fic!!! 😍❤️❤️

This was so sweet and tender and my heart feels so light and warm!! Thorin’s longing was so palpable and sweet and when they finally met again? MY HEART!!!

“Thorin!” she called him in that melodious voice of hers, and there were diamonds in her eyes, or perhaps it was only his vision that suddenly turned very blurry, and he opened her arms, and thought “the Abyss take the protocol!”, and he rushed towards her, ignoring Balin clearing his throat in embarrassment, because she was finally here, and he had waited long enough—and they finally met halfway. This was one of my favourite moments. It made me smile so much 🥺❤️

Thank you for this ❤️❤️❤️

Btw, dwarves live for around 250 years

Thorin was 24 in the movie (according to google)

He was literally a pre-teen in dwarf years

He was a baby

Thats why he was such a dick

He was a stubborn little baby

lathalea

@grabowskibeepboop The movies don’t exactly follow the book timeline for creative reasons, but Thorin was this age when Smaug attacked Erebor, and then many years passed.

If you want to be boring like me and go with the original source, Tolkien's books, here goes the infodump:

  • Thorin was 24 yo when Smaug came. Which means young, but grown enough to understand his duties as the heir to the throne 👑
  • From what we know, we can safely assume that dwarves in Middle Earth develop similarly to humans, they just live much longer, so he was most probably mostly fully grown already then, in physical sense. Dwarves are considered mature at 40 yo (and this is the age when they are "battle-ready", too), but it doesn't mean they would look and act like 18-year olds at that age, their life experience would be comparable to a human 40-year old in many aspects 💪
  • 171 years passed between Sack of Erebor and the Quest in the book (the movie says it was only 60 years for some reason).
  • So when Thorin arrived to Erebor to reclaim it with his Company, he was 195 years old 😱
  • And since his youth, he was under great pressure. He lost his home and most of his family, he was a king responsible for tens of thousands of his people, he created a new home for them, he had huge responsibility on his shoulders, trying to reclaim Erebor and survive it PLUS protect his nephews (and heirs) and his other companions from awful death in dragon fire. You grow up pretty quickly in those circumstances 😭

If you're still here and haven't fallen asleep, congrats! 🤣🤣🤣

legolasbadass

Thank you @lathalea for this great and concise (😉) analysis of Thorin's character!

But also ... how is Thorin “a dick”? I often see people saying he was rude and unfair to Bilbo when they first met. Perhaps he was, but it was nothing personal. Thorin needs help in his quest — he expects someone that looks like they can defend themselves and survive in the wild, someone with experience — and then he finds that all he has is a hobbit who complains a lot and only talks about his home (please don’t come at me for saying this about Bilbo. I would have been the same on the quest, but I’m looking at this from Thorin’s perspective).

People also say that he is rude to the Elves. Alright, maybe his aversion to Elrond (again, in the movie!! Read the book people I am begging you!) was misplaced, but as always, it’s important to see things from his perspective. And even if we overlook the fact that not all elves are responsible for not helping the dwarves when Smaug attacked Erebor, that does not change the fact that Elrond does not hesitate to give his opinion on Thorin’s quest when it is none of his business. Erebor is Thorin’s birthright! He decides to go on his quest for the good of his people. That is his choice and his right.

As for how Thorin treats Thranduil ... whether or not Thranduil was right to not help the dwarves is another matter. What’s important is that Thorin believes they were betrayed by their once ally, and can you blame him? He lost everything when the dragon came, and no one helped him and his people. He has every right to be bitter about that.

And I better not see anyone talking about what Thorin did and said while he was under the effect of the dragon sickness. He was not himself! The movie and the book make that pretty clear, and Thorin recognizes his errors before he dies  he is crowned king and lives happily ever after. Thorin is a great king — the book recognizes this, as do Bilbo and his people.

tl;dr Thorin is not a dick. He is a complex character with his own thoughts, opinions, and motivations.

lathalea

Reading this post was a pleasure @legolasbadass and you made so many good points!

It's very easy to simplify the characters, especially in movies where their backgrounds are perhaps less known, but I think in case of Thorin we got quite a lot of foreshadowing to know what kind of burdens he has to bear and what experiences formed him as a person. Plus, his approach to Bilbo at first reflects his sense of responsibility - if he takes the "unskilled" (from his POV) hobbit, he knows Bilbo will have to be protected by his companions along the way in order to make sure he survives. On a quest like this, it may make a big difference when it comes to safety, among other things, so his reluctance here is very much grounded.

The same goes for the scene when Balin tells everyone the story of Azanulbizar and Azog. Thorin knows how dangerous orcs are and still remembers that time when he lost his grandfather and then his father. Btw, I like to watch that scene and focus on a different character each time, to see it from their POV, see their reactions, and so on. It's very much nuanced and very well played.

And don't get me started about the elves... Half of the Silmarillion reads like a conquerors' diary (conquerors=Elves ofc) when it comes to their relations with the Dwarves who are sometimes even treated like animals or subservient species. But that's a topic for another post :D

Anyway, wanting to reclaim your home, your homeland, for your people, and doing everything you can to achieve it after so many tragic events in your past is not my definition of a "man baby" but YMMV.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk 💙

All of the above posts really do Thorin the justice he deserves. Thank you, Fizzy, @lathalea and @legolasbadass . You've all given beginners and those more seasoned in the fandom a different perspective.

Often, people overlook Thorin and only see his flaws. Whereas, if you look into the character as well as we have, you'll find things to be quite different about our fave Mountain King!
